Testing the API Behind a Mobile App

Marc van’t Veer

Key Concepts:

"There's an App for that" is a commonly used term today. Whatever functionality is needed, an App can be found to support it. The data (content) being presented by an App is delivered by an API. API stands for Application Programming Interface and this is the communication framework between applications. The question is how to test the API behind an App or a social media site. That’s what testing the API behind a mobile App is about.

A service must meet a large number of requirements. These are not just functional requirements, but also requirements regarding stability, response time, security, scalability and extendibility with future functions. Testing an API is more than just testing the functionality. Expected future use must also be taken into account. In defining the test approach, the tester must be aware of this and think about future usage and integration with new devices or systems.

Testing an API is explained step-by-step using a public service. What is the best test approach to be followed? What type of test environment is needed? Testing in a production environment? When does testing of the API stop and is testing of (e.g.) a mobile App started? Who is responsible for the end-to-end test? These kind of questions are covered in this training.
