Requirements Management

For a successful software projects the role of requirements management is undoubtedly very important. It is the procedure of documenting, identifying and then monitoring the requirements of all stakeholders in the project to ensure that all are met successfully. It is one of the key responsibilities of the project manager.

The secret for a successful requirements management is effective communication between the project team members and the stakeholders. Opting for the best practices in this aspect has proved to save both time and money by reducing the rework and accelerating the time to market by collaborating with the stakeholders. This is followed by increasing the productivity by controlling as well as managing changes to the requirements. Because effective requirement management measures the impact of changes as it occurs both the cost and risk can be minimized.

As already mentioned the success of requirements management depends on effective communication, here are some steps to ensure that all is in right path from the beginning. Hence, in the first step there should be an investigation where the project team members and the stake holders must identify the aim followed by examining requirements important to meet such goals. In this phase both are aware that early requirement structure is going to change in future as the project moves forward.

In the next step the feasibility of the project is determined in terms of the cost. This step helps the project to move forward, this time with design and development. It is important both for the project manager and stake holders to identify the exact requirement followed by identifying the technological capabilities and expertise required to achieve the success or complete the project within the stipulated time.

In the third step the project gradually moves to the design phase where the identified project goals gradually come into the shape. In this step or phase the requirement will inevitably experience some change that must be communicated and addressed by the members responsible for several aspects of design. In the step of requirements management it is important to identify that whether the upcoming changes will affect the cost and the scope of the project any way.

After approving the design in the fourth step come construction and testing based on the design that has been approved. A working model is constructed to ensure that the project progress as per the schedule and remain within the budget. This is also the phase where project requirements are often adjusted in the testing stage before released.
